Daycare Cleaning and Disinfection Guide for NC Providers

Daycare cleaning is harder than school cleaning because the population is younger, more vulnerable, and constantly putting things in their mouths. Chemistry has to kill pathogens without residues that pose a risk to infants. Here is the practical protocol we follow in NC daycares and preschools.

The four zones of a daycare

• Diapering and toileting — highest risk, most frequent cleaning
• Food prep and eating surfaces — sanitizer only (food-contact safe)
• Play surfaces and toys — safe disinfectant with rinse
• General classroom — standard high-touch protocol

Diapering areas

Every changing table should be disinfected after every use with a hospital-grade, fragrance-free product that has a rinse step for infant safety. Trash should be covered, foot-pedal operated, and lined with heavy-duty odor-control bags emptied at least twice daily.

Food and eating surfaces

High chairs, table tops, and food-prep counters must be washed with detergent first, then sanitized with a food-contact-safe product — no lingering disinfectant residues. This is a common licensing citation in NC daycares that use nightly janitorial disinfectants on daytime food surfaces.

Toys and shared surfaces

Hard toys should be washed and disinfected at minimum daily; anything that has been mouthed goes into a bin for immediate cleaning. Plush toys should either be avoided or laundered weekly. Books need surface disinfection weekly.

Outbreak protocol

During confirmed hand-foot-mouth, norovirus, or RSV outbreaks: full electrostatic disinfection of every classroom, replacement of shared cloth items, and a temporary shift to disposable serviceware. NC daycares should have this protocol in writing.
