When Should You Repair or Replace a Tire?
Not every puncture means a new tire — and not every tire can be safely repaired. Here's how to tell the difference.

A nail in the tread does not automatically mean buying a new tire. But some damage genuinely cannot be repaired safely at any price. Knowing the difference protects both your wallet and everyone in the vehicle.
When a tire can usually be repaired
- The puncture is in the tread area, not the shoulder or sidewall
- The hole is small — roughly a quarter inch or less
- There is still healthy tread depth remaining
- The tire has not been driven flat long enough to damage the inner liner
- There is only one repair in that area of the tire
What a proper repair looks like
A durable repair means removing the tire from the wheel, inspecting the inside for hidden damage, and sealing the injury from the inside. A plug pushed in from the outside without inspection is a temporary measure, not a permanent fix.
When replacement is the safer call
- Any sidewall or shoulder damage — these areas flex constantly and cannot hold a repair
- Bulges, bubbles or visible cord — signs of internal structural failure
- Tread worn down to or below the wear bars
- Long cracks, dry rot, or age-related rubber breakdown
- The tire was driven while flat and the inner liner is chewed up
What Factors Affect This Service?
- Vehicle type — car, SUV, pickup, van or light-duty truck
- Service required — repair, replacement, mounting or rotation
- Location and accessibility of the vehicle
- Tire size, type and equipment requirements
- Overall condition of the tire and wheel
Catching problems before they become expensive
A slow leak addressed early is a simple repair. The same leak ignored for a month can ruin the tire's internal structure, damage the wheel, and leave you stranded — often at the worst possible moment. Prompt inspection is almost always the cheaper path.
Korvix Services provides mobile tire and basic vehicle assistance across Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Apex and surrounding communities — at your home, your workplace or your fleet location.
Frequently asked questions
Can a sidewall puncture be repaired?
+
No. The sidewall flexes with every rotation and cannot hold a safe, durable repair. A sidewall injury means replacement.
How many times can one tire be repaired?
+
Repairs must not overlap and should be limited. Multiple punctures in the same area mean the tire should be replaced.
Do you come to my location?
+
Yes — we provide mobile tire service at homes, workplaces, parking lots and fleet locations throughout the Raleigh-Durham area.
